Guide to Geodes

Geodes are hollow rocks containing an inner layer of crystal. The outer layer looks just like any other rock, making them easy to overlook. However, when you open a geode up, you will be greeted by a beautiful display of crystals.

Though 12% of the Earth’s crust is made of
Quartz crystals, Amethyst is the most common mineral found on the inside of a Brazilian geode. However, around the world, Quartz, Agate Calcite, Pyrite, Hematite, Barite, Smithsonite, Celestite, and others, may also be found.

How Geodes Form

Geode formation is a complex process that takes place over thousands or even millions of years. These rocks begin as hollow bubbles inside of igneous and sedimentary rocks that likely formed due to the presence of tree roots or animal burrows. Over time, and with the presence of groundwater, minerals are deposited within these hollow spaces. Changes in temperature or chemistry cause the minerals to precipitate out of the water and harden along the cavity walls.

The first layer is often chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. As the process continues, however, more and more inwardly pointing crystals can form. Interestingly, geodes may also be discovered without their host rock. This is because the chalcedony that lined the inside of the rock is more durable than the rock itself. So as the rock decomposes or erodes, the solid, intact geodes are left behind.

Uses for Geodes

Geodes can be used for a multitude of purposes, including assistance with decision-making, facilitating communication between people in the same healing fields or with divine beings, creating good moods and energies, help with meditation, stress relief, and more. The type of crystal a geode contains will determine the benefits it can provide you.

Agate- Quartz Geodes
As the name suggests, these geodes are filled with Quartz crystals. Quartz is the most abundant mineral found on Earth’s surface and is the most used natural substance due to its unique physical and chemical properties. Quartz comes in several varieties, including Aventurine, Carnelian, Jasper, Milky Quartz, Morion, Praseolite, Rose Quartz, and Smoky Quartz. Amethyst is a variety of Quartz geodes, as is Agate with its specialty to balance and create manifestation with its Quartz crystals inside.
