Megalodon Shark Fossil Tooth 98 g

Approximately 2.75" W x 3.5" H

The Megalodon (Otodus megalodon) was one of the largest and most powerful predators to ever exist, dominating Earth’s oceans approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago. This prehistoric giant shark could grow up to 60 feet in length, making it more than three times the size of today’s Great White Shark. With an estimated bite force of over 40,000 pounds, the Megalodon preyed on whales, large fish, and other marine mammals, cementing its place at the top of the food chain.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Megalodon research comes from its fossilized teeth. Since shark skeletons are made of cartilage, they rarely fossilize, but their teeth—composed of durable enamel—remain as key evidence of their existence. Megalodon teeth are easily recognizable due to their massive size, triangular shape, and finely serrated edges, which were perfect for slicing through bone and flesh. Some specimens measure over 7 inches, making them prized finds for fossil collectors and paleontologists alike.

Megalodon tooth fossils are discovered worldwide, from North and South America to Europe, Asia, and Australia, highlighting the species’ vast oceanic range. These teeth not only offer a glimpse into the shark’s feeding habits and evolutionary adaptations but also hold significant scientific value in understanding ancient marine ecosystems.

Today, Megalodon fossils captivate both scientists and enthusiasts, sparking imagination about Earth’s prehistoric seas. Whether studied in museums or collected as natural history treasures, Megalodon teeth remain enduring symbols of the ocean’s most legendary predator.
